Packing Tips Used by Our Pros
Start packing about a month before your move to help with time management and relieve stress.
• Label all boxes on the top and at least one side. Use colour codes for different rooms.
• Place cords and hardware in sandwich bags, and label them to keep organized. Put in “Parts Box.”
• Remove batteries from electronics, including tools and remotes.
• Make a “last-minute pack” box for your most important items to open first.
Books
Use small cartons, and pack them sideways on their spine, over a few layers of paper.
Plants
Keep plants with you. Movers are not responsible for damage to plants.
Flammables and Combustibles
These items must not be packed as temperature changes can cause them to leak or explode. Movers will not be held responsible. Please refer to “Packing Guidelines” for more information.
Medicines
Place in small bags inside of cartons. NOTE: Keep those you need with you on your person as you may not be able to find them right away while unpacking.
China and Glassware
Mark boxes “FRAGILE”. If you use newspaper, you may need to clean all glassware upon arrival at the new destination. Unprinted paper is available for purchase.
Plates, Platters and Saucers
Pack on their sides and pad with layers of foam or bubble wrap, as well as along the top and sides of the box.
Utensils
Wrap and place small appliances and utensils in cartons with heavier items on the bottom.
Cans
Pack upright with no more than 24-30 cans per box. Wrap glass containers separately.
Large Appliances
Call an authorized service person to prepare all large appliances for moving well in advance.
Tools
Pack in strong, small cartons. Wrap separately if valuable.

Clocks
Remover or secure pendulums in large clocks. Call an expert to prepare grandfather clocks.
Drapes and Curtains
Remove curtains from rods. Pack in cartons or fold on hangers in the closet to load into the wardrobe cartons. Bunch 2-3 hangers together with elastic or wire tie or plastic bag.
Lamps and Lampshades
Remove bulbs, harps and shades. Roll up cord. Pack lamps with bedding or wrap separately and place them upright in lined cartons – wrap shades in tissue. Place upright in a carton lined with unprinted paper.
Mirrors, Paintings and Pictures
Place tape diagonally across mirrors for protection. Larger pictures and mirrors will be wrapped with a mover’s pad. High-value items should be crated, or they will travel at the owner’s risk. Ask your consultant for more information.
Large Items
Vases and statues should also be kept upright in sturdier containers. Tie long items such as skis, brooms, mops for ease of handling.
TVs
Use your original box, or ask your sales consultant about purchasing a TV box.
Computer and Video Equipment
If the original box and packaging is not available, use strong corrugated cartons and protective pads. Place additional padding between cartons and equipment. Wrap cords separately and label. Take a picture of the back of your computer to remember where each cord goes.
